-- Brussels, 22 December 2006
(inter-organisational survey-communiqué, released to the general public)
In the fall of 2006 an opinion-survey was conducted among 149 executives who are active in a variety of organisations, in Europe mainly. Each executive was asked to reflect individually, and for at least two months, on a pre-selected set of ten famous quotations. The theme of the quotations was the past-present-future continuum. The single most appealing, revealing, or enriching quotation then had to be chosen. The results of the individual choices have taken the form of a composite of "best" quotes, that somewhat illustrates the level of ambiguity leaders are dealing with in our fast-paced society. This is the "Top 3" :
1. "We are shaping the world faster than we can change ourselves, and we are applying to the present, the habits of the past." -- Churchill
2. "Study the past if you would divine the future." -- Confucius
3. "In the maxim of the past you cannot go anywhere." -- Gorky
The
theme for next year's survey is creativity (innovative thinking and
action). The Thierry Graduate School will release the set of inspiring quotations
in March 2007.
