PhD in Leadership and Mastery of Change

Application,  admission, available places, and  programme-start.

With the aim of meeting the person-centredness and the quality-objectives of our programmes, the number of places in our PhD curriculum is limited. There are no more than sixteen places available in our postgraduate programme in which English is the sole language of instruction, plus four places for participants in the bilingual English-French programme-version. The places-system combines newly admitted applicants who (will) start their programmes, plus the in-programme participants (students) engaged in the coursework of the first three pillars in the Thierry PhD-curriculum. Places become available for new participants as soon as a number of in-programme participants have engaged into their field-projects (i.e. the fourth pillar).

To qualify for admission an applicant has to meet a number of requirements; the major ones are:

the strong will or intrinsic drive (calling) to evolve or grow into a major role in the fields of human development, leader(ship) education, environmental leadership, or, in more general terms, in organisational, community, or societal improvement or growth;

  the demonstration of at least 10 years of relevant full-time professional experience, with a leadership component (e.g. experience in leading and/or education), and preferably acquired after having obtained a Masters degree. For further reference, the average age of our PhDs is 43 (range is +/- 37 to 55 years of age).

  the need to have earned a masters degree. The leadership core-curriculum in the PhD programme is very extensive, it is therefore not required that leadership be the field of study of the previously earned master degree     Pease read the latest update/information, valid as of September 2008, click here.

the necessity of combining professional activity and personal life, with study. Major portions of the programme require self-led timing of opportunities for learning, and in an asynchronous mode (i.e. modules are completed individually).

the openness to engage into cross-cultural relationship-building. This aspect is especially relevant for the two-week Summer residential programme-module, during which there is extensive interaction with fellow participants from many nations, cultures, and professional environments around the world.

Admitted PhD programme-participants generally engage into their course-programmes at the beginning of a given month. This usually occurs during the months of August to November, or of January to May. There could be possibilities to start at another moment of the year. In all cases please contact the Director in order to obtain information about the availability of places

  Requests for additional information about the programme, the application procedure, the place availability, tuition-fee levels, financial assistance, ... should be addressed directly to Prof. Jean-Pierre Bal, Executive Director of the Graduate School. Please include your CV as an attachment, by email to: phd@thierryschool.be  or  directorate@thierryschool.be
