Specialty areas: Youth Leadership Development, and Online-based Leadership Education

Sharon Kinsey has held an interest in leadership since the time she began her own leadership journey through her involvement in a student leadership organization. Today, her work for Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, revolves around youth development as a faculty member of the 4-H Youth Development Program. In this realm, she provides leadership to a comprehensive research-based urban youth development educational program for Camden County youth. Her responsibilities include program planning, promotion, implementation and evaluation; utilization of a variety of delivery modes; working with volunteers; and program marketing and public relations.

Sharon’s other interest, in distance education, has grown over the past seven years. She became acquainted with online learning in 2001 when she enrolled in a master’s degree program at Seton Hall University, New Jersey. Upon completion of her degree, she moved into  online course development and teaching for Rutgers University in New Brunswick; Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and for Drexel University in Philadelphia. She has been teaching online for three years now, and in such areas as communications and leadership; ethics and leadership; small business communication; and technical communication.

Her previous work experience also includes time as a journalist, a grant writer, communications consulting and working as a trainer in both professional development and youth development settings.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Media from Cook College, Rutgers University, and a master’s degree in Strategic Communication and Leadership from Seton Hall University. She is currently enrolled in the PhD program at our Graduate School, and attended the 2006 Summer residential program, presenting a lecture on the topic “Can Leadership Be Taught Effectively in an Online Environment?” (picture at the right).
