ELFA Team
Our team of Experiential Learning Facilitation Advisors ('ELFA') in leadership education and development mirrors the roles and activities undertaken on the high seas, aboard a sailing ship. Such type of vessel represents an environment-friendly and team-spirited vehicle, a leader-ship that carries maximum fifty programme participants per year, towards their new horizons of thought, feeling and action. The nautical world also inspired the school to adopt the "MainSail", "StaySail", "Professor-At-Large", and the "Fleet" description titles or qualifications. The faculty or staff members can, contingent on local approvals, also be active at our affiliate institution in France.
For some of our programmes offered in distance learning mode, the experiential component takes on a supplemental form. On having experienced the learning and development process by attending or having completed one or several of our distance education programmes, most of our StaySail e-learning faculty members can be called upon to guide and coach new participants in the graduate and postgraduate distance education programmes of our institution.
Tille descriptions
MainSail - On a sailboat the mainsail (or topsail) uses the carrier winds to provide the principal motion that propels the vessel forward, to reach a given speed. At our graduate school the senior faculty members hold the qualification of MainSail professor (lecturer), and/or coach.
StaySail - A staysail (or foresail, or jib) keeps the ship's motion finely tuned with the carrier winds, and on a precise course, while generating a boost in cruising-speed. A StaySail Faculty-member (equiv. to an adjunct or assistant professor or lecturer) shares his/her knowledge and expertise in a given course or specialty area. A StaySail member can be an alumnus, or a currently enrolled participant who is at an advanced stage in his/her programme. Up to sixteen faculty members can be StaySail ones.
At-Large ("across oceans") From 2002-2008 the School invited professors from other educational institutions to join the school's faculty as At-Large faculty members. Up to twelve professors could be appointed At-Large, an award on special nomination by our school's director. In 2010 a new type of advisory board will be established, the former At-Large faculty role will be modified, in line with the new board structure. (list of past 2002-2009 members click here ).
Fleet - The role of the Fleet faculty is somewhat external to the main vessel, less visible, less immediate, but an important one. In general this role is linked to the requirements set forth in, on the one hand, the degree-awarding processes at various institutions, or on the other hand in providing logistical support in the frame of contingency situations' planning. Over the years the composition of the Fleet members averaged eight persons (accreditation past surveyors not included), plus many other external academic staff members who offered special assistance, for instance as theses reviewers and/or jury members.
